Henry M. Stanley - In darkest Africa - 1890

Henry M. Stanley - In darkest Africa - 1890
Collected works, Colonial history, Illustrated, Topography, Travels - Quantity: 2

I have here a 2-book set entitled IN DARKEST AFRICA or the Quest, Rescue and Retreat of Emin Governor of Equatoria by Henry M Stanley, Vols I and II. published in 1890 by Charles Scribner, New York. It has 2 steel engravings (portraits of Stanley), 150 illustrations and maps.

Edition: 1st US Edition
Number of Pages: Volume I - 547, Volume II - 540
Dimensions: Both Volumes are 6“W x 9“T x 1.75“
Illustrations: Both volumes richly illustrated with both full page drawings as well as numerous additional smaller illustrations. Both volumes have a frontispiece of portrait of Henry Stanley, Volume I a 1886 portrait and Volume II a 1890 portrait. There are 42 full page B&W illustrations, 1 full page color illustration, and 103 additional illustrations within the text. Both volumes have map pockets in the back of each volume with Volume I containing a large folded map and Volume II containing two folded maps.

Condition (See Photos for Details): Good. The cloth covers show their age with wear on the corners and the edges and tops and bottoms of the spine. This is a set combined from two separate original pairs. Volume I has no markings and a few early pages show very small tears and folds and the frontispiece portrait of Stanley shows some water staining on one corner and the top of the rear end paper shows some minor water staining. Volume II has the number 967 painted on the spine and a bookmark from a school and a name stamp on the end paper. It also has a couple pencil markings, one at the top of the frontispiece portrait of Stanley reading "H.M.S. died May 1904" and the other the number 967 written on the copyright information page. Other than those markings there appear to be no other markings in the volume. Page 3-4 has the lower right corner torn out but it does not affect the text. The spine of Volume II is partly broken as shown in the photos. Other than that the volume is solid and clean. Overall the set is in Good Condition. The maps in the map pocket appear to be in very good condition but the folds and corners are fragile. All in all these two volumes appear to be in pretty good condition for books that are 130 years old.

Vol I 547 pp, Vol II 540 pp. 23 x 15 cm.
