The reclining Buddha scene is important within ancient Buddhism, as it symbolises his final illness before passing into Nirvana (ultimate spiritual enlightenment). After his death, Buddha's followers built a statue of him in the same reclined position.

Northern Wei Dynasty or Northern Wei Empire, also known as Tuoba Wei (魏), later Wei (後魏), or Yuan Wei (元魏), was a dynasty founded by the Tuoba clan of the Xianbei, who ruled over northern China from 386 to 534 AD, during the period of the southern and northern dynasties. Described as "part of an era of political turbulence and intense social and cultural change", the Northern Wei dynasty is particularly known for unifying northern China in 439: this was also a period of introduction of foreign ideas, such as Buddhism, which became firmly established.

During Emperor Xiaowen's Taihe period (477-499), court advisors instituted radical reforms and introduced changes that eventually led the dynasty to move its capital from Datong to Luoyang in 494. It changed its own family name from Tuoba to Yuan as part of the systematic Synicization. Towards the end of the dynasty there was a great internal dissension that resulted in a division between East Wei and West Wei.
