osef Albert Navarro Mas y Marquet was the director of the Society of Agriculture of the Royal Academy of Natural Sciences and Arts of Barcelona, created in 1764, within a European movement of agronomic reform due to the population increase and therefore the growth of demand for consumer goods, especially agricultural products. Due to a change in consumption, the production of distillates and spirits also increased greatly. Vine cultivation and winemaking became the most profitable economic activity of the time and, therefore, one of the star themes of agronomic thought of the time. Navarro was of the opinion that Catalan wines had very little quality and accused both vine growers and winemakers. He believed that it was necessary to reduce the quantity and bet on quality. The ‘Memoria sobre la bonificación de los vinos’ is one of his two reports that were published.
