C. 2nd-1st Millennium BC
A finely moulded beige pottery storage jar with faience surfaces, features a geometric register running across the body. The globular body rises from a rounded base, leading to a narrowed neck and a flared rim.
Chipped rim and surfaces with traces of blue/green faience remaining and intact. The green is faience which has been applied to the pot. Stand included.
The very bright bluegreen faience on the body is a very distinctive feature of faience vessels from these regions.
Its very simple shape and simple polychromy contribute to teh stiking presentation made by this small vessel. The globular body turns into a high neck with a slightly flared wall, surmounted by a thick rounded lip. The decoration is only to be found on the shoulder and bulbous area of the pot. These vases were classified by S. Fukai according to their sizes. These jars seem to have been made in the the regions of Hasanlu and Ziwiye, in modern-day Western Iran, even if many examples were excavated in other Near-Eastern cities as Assur, Babylon and so on. While imitations of these vessels have been found as far away as the ancient Elam (Susa). The type of jars and comparable pieces have been found in tombs and the presence of the glaze, inside and out of the small jars indicates that they were intended to store and transport liquids that are thought to have been connected with funeral rites.
