Electric locomotive Series BR E 94.
Series BR E 94 locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DRB), as developed by AEG and with the operating livery of the early 1940s. Due to its design, the Series E 94, also referred to as the "Crocodile" or "Eisenschwein" (The Iron Pig), first made its appearance in 1940 and was intended for heavy freight trains and also for passenger transport. After the War, an additional number of these units were built, which, together with the older E 94s, were used in both East and West Germany as well as in Austria until the 1990s.
The Series BR194/E94, also known as the "German Crocodile", were built during the period 1940-1945 by the companies AEG, SSW and Kraus-Maffei. The Series BR194/E94s were built especially for heavy freight transport, but were also regularly used for passenger trains. Up until 1945, a total of 146 of these locomotives were built. These locomotives attained a top speed of between 90 - 100 km/h. When hauling up to 2000 tons, these locomotives could still attain a top speed of approx. 85 km/h. After WW II, several locomotives were delivered and these units of the Series BR E94 were apportioned between East- and West-Germany and Austria. Most of these locomotives went to the DB. The GDR had a total stock of 30 units and the Austrian ÖBB had 44 units. In the period between1954-1956, a further 43 units of the Series BR E94 locomotives were built and delivered. During the 1960s, the roofs were lengthened and these adapted locomotives then continued as the Series E194. The reason for extending the roof was that the engineers experienced much discomfort from the sun. In 1988, the last of the Series BR 194/E94 was decommissioned with the DB, and in 1991 the last unit with the GDR and in 1995 the last unit with the ÖBB (Rh 1020) were decommissioned.
