The letters are an exceptional source of information for understanding the life at the court of Louis XIII, the customs and gallantry. Most letters are addressed to high-ranking people, such as the Prince de Condé, the Cardinal de La Valette or the famous Marquise de Rambouillet.
Voiture (1597-1648) was a man of the world and a courtier all his life, brilliant in salons and game rooms. His talent as a letter writer enabled him to make prose fashionable in France.
He is an essential figure in the literary scene of the early seventeenth century, a real Molière-like character.
He enjoyed great fame in his time and is still a style model of seventeenth-century France.
