One of the most curious works by Theophilus Folengo (1491-1544), a Benedictine monk who is best known under the pseudonym of Merlino Coccajo and who published burlesque poems for a living, which he called macaronis, probably in reference to macaroni pasta. This kind of poetry is a mixture of grotesque ideas, bad taste, licentious images and some original antics, which Rabelais did not hesitate to imitate.

Rare work in good condition of the Histoire macaronique, followed in the second volume by the Horrible bataille des mouches et des fourmis. Although printed in 1606, this is a forgery of the first French edition of that date, printed in 1734.
