Antique 18th century book in French. Missions. Dominicans. Christianisation and Evangelisation of Asia. China.
Interesting, sparse and valued work dealing with the Christianisation of China carried out by the missions of Spanish Dominicans in the 17th century. The first chapters deal with Confucianism, beliefs, rituals and religious practices in the Chinese Empire in the 17th century. The work of the Spanish Dominicans Juan Bautista de Morales, Francisco Fernández de Capillas and other missionaries, who also brought Christianity to Cambodia and the Philippines, is also remarkable.
In 1633, Pope Urban VIII's Bull ‘Ex debito pastoralis officii’ opened the Chinese Empire to the mendicant orders and was the end of the Jesuits' privilege in China for nearly fifty years. After the aforementioned papal bull, mainly three mendicant orders—Franciscans and Dominicans initially, and a few years later the Augustinians—shared the task of evangelising the territory of China and spreading the faith there. The Dominicans who entered the Kingdom of China belonged to the Province of the Most Holy Rosary, an administrative jurisdiction of the Dominican Order in Manila, the Philippines.
