This is the revised and enlarged edition of the translation from the Latin, with editorial work, by François Deboze. With its brief descrriptiuove accounts of hundreds of diseases and medical problems, assisted by a very detailed index, this is a superb book for anyone interested in knowing quickly how illnesses were diagnosed and treated at the time.
Lazare Rivière (1589-1655) practiced medicine in Montpellier, and eventually became physician to the French king. He was by all accounts a superb teacher but his is written works received a mixed reception; he was sometimes accused of plagiarism and he was disparaged by Jean Astruc in his 'Memoires pour servir à la l’histoire de la médecine de Montpelier' (1767), although Haller thought very highly of his work. His influence across Europe is now well-documented. See for exampler, L. Dulieu, ‘Lazare, Rivière’, Revue de l’histoire de la pharmacie, 18 (1966). A.
