In 1991, Tonya Harding was the first American to complete the Triple Axel. On the eve of the 1994 Olympic Winter Games, Tonya Harding asked her bodyguard to send death threats to her rival Nancy Kerrigan and she also sent her bodyguard to hit her legs with an iron bar. Nancy Kerrigan was severely injured in the knee. Following this case, Tonya Harding was convicted by the American justice system and she was banned from figure skating for life, despite her appeals for clemency. One of the biggest scandals in the history of the sport.
