Gabriel Alonso de Herrera (Talavera de la Reina 1470 - 1539) was the brother of humanists Hernando and Diego Alonso de Herrera. Chaplain to Cardinal Cisneros, under whose patronage and funding he published this famous treatise, he travelled through France and Italy to gather information for the treatise, as well as techniques used by the Muslims, the result of his ten years in Granada. The first edition was published in Alcalá de Henares (1513), 14 editions were published in Spanish in the 16th century, and published up to the 18th century. This is the fourth Italian edition (Palau 114111).

The second book is entirely devoted to the viniculture.
