McCoy Tyner was born in Philadelphia on 11 December 1938. His first musical influences come from listening to Bud Powell.
Tyner's career began in 1960, as a pianist in the training of Benny Golson and Art Farmer. In the same year he replaced Steve Kuhn and officially entered the historic quartet of JOHN COLTRANE, together with Elvin Jones on drums and Jimmy Garrison on double bass. He therefore took part, between 1961 and 1965, in the making of some of the most important records in the history of jazz such as MY FAVORITE THINGS, A LOVE SUPREME and BALLADS. (Source: Wikipedia)
