A suberb second edition from 1741. The books are without author’s name but have been attributed by Barbier to Mauvillon.
Lovely copies. Eugène de Savoye was one of the most illustrious soldiers of his time.
After being disgraced by Louis XIV, which he inherited from his mother, he joined the army of the Empire after being rejected by the king. After the Holy League war (Empire, Poland, Venice) against the Turks, he was made major-general at the age of 22.
His various campaigns, notably against France during the Spanish Succession, against Italy and the Turks, earned him the rank of generalissimo, and then governor of the Netherlands in the later years of his life. Napoleon I considered him to be one of the 7 great generals of history. Beyond the military biography of the character, the book presents a very insightful political history of modern Europe. Here, 1705 to 1736.
