Malines (Mechelen) Alabaster Bas-relief
Finely carved Malines (Mechelen) alabaster bas-relief with a Nativity scene. Mary is depicted kneeling on the left hand side of the crib, two shepherds and the ox on the right hand side.
The alabaster is signed with a 2 letter monogram on the lower frieze (see photos). The monogram is probably that of Nicolas Daems (ND)
The early frame is probably original from the time of the alabaster sculpture. Often one finds these alabaster sculptures with a later frame. The one here for sale - both the alabaster and the frame are from the early 17th century.
There is a crack in the lower bottom half (see photos).
The alabaster with traces of gilding is mounted on an oak panel. Have a look at the nice patina on the back of panel.
A masterpiece in its genre!
