“Has cost its author, wrote F Lennel in the Revue du Nord (1926) two years of unceasing labour, and he fully justifies his title. Luxuriously published, enriched with very abundant documentary illustrations, its is indeed a portrait as complete as it is faithful to the life of our great northern French port during the long years of war when, threatened by the enemy, subjected to terrible bombardments by air, land and sea, it continued to play a leading role in national defence and deserves the beautiful quote: “Heroic City, serve as an example for the whole Nation.”
His book presents, as it should, a keener interest for those from Dunkerque who will find in it an account of their daily existence, reading it will, nevertheless, benefit all French people for whom certain passages will be real revelations.

Indeed, the most secret archives of our ministries of war, and the navy, as well as those of Belgium, and Great Britain, archives from the British naval base and the aeronautical services and M. Chatelle was able to heavily draw from them.

The bombings that caused appalling damage and, from October 1914 to November 4, 1918, killed 575 people and wounded 1,101 in the population of Dunkirk are described in a precise way. Long passages are devoted to them and the photographs which, taken just as they had just occurred, have retained the direct aspect of these scenes of ruin and death. With their own eloquence, they speak of the heroism of the inhabitants who suffered them.
