M.C. Escher (1898-1972) initially opted for an architect's degree at the School of Architecture and Decorative Arts in Haarlem. There his drawing talent was discovered by the graphic artist Jessurun de Mesquita, who encouraged him to switch to graphic training. His interest in architecture can still be clearly seen in his work, not only in working with planes, but also in his playing with mathematical figures and perspective. As a result, he manages to combine several styles in one work, which do not belong together but form a logical whole due to the ingenious construction.
