Francois Alexandre de Garsault (1693–1778) was captain of the French stables, a member of the Academy of Sciences. He dealt in particular with equestrianism, horse riding, natural history and literature. The new perfect marshal will always be useful to those who run stables, or who deal in some way with the study and education of horses. See Biografia universale, XVI, pp. 501-502.
He was a prolific versatile writer active in Paris, whose fame stems from the treaties of hippology, which remained among the classics in this matter, and those of a naturalistic topic, especially related to botany. Graesse, III, p. 31. Brunet, Table, 7725. Mennessier de La Lance, I, 526 (lists his other hippological works).
Firm binding, more recent, full leather with spine with five raised bands, gold title on a tag and rich golden friezes made with small tools. Pp. 2 b.; (34), 512, CXXVII. A beautiful copy with widespread stains. Red and black title page, large and refined woodcut head- and tailpieces. Beautiful descriptive plates, finely engraved in copper, drawn from life by the Author; the first plates depict various breeds of horses, their physical characteristics, harnesses and various accessories; the next ones, bound at the end, reproduce various types of medicinal plants.
