‘Phrenology begins at the end of the 18th century with the work of doctor F. J. Gali. It has a period of maximum diffusion in the first third of the 19th century, and then began a decline. In Spain it arrived late, reaching a maximum development between 1843 and 1857. The rejection of the official medicine, the disinterest of the general public, the condemnation of the Catholic Church, and the sign of the times—purely absolutist—, were the factors that influenced its low dissemination. Phrenology in Spain revolved around the figure and activity of Mariano Cubí, propagator or apostle of this ‘science’ in Spain, where he arrived in 1842, after being twenty years in the American continent. Upon his arrival he undertook the publicity tasks; he published several books and founded a magazine on the new doctrine.’ [King González, Antonio M., Clásicos de la psiquiatría española del siglo XIX: Mariano Cubí i Soler.]
