Eichi Kato (加藤英 / 正山) – Seto ware – spettacolare smaltatura naturale – Giappone, periodo Heisei - Chawan - Aardewerk - Seto-aardewerk
A powerful and highly expressive Japanese chawan by the well-known potter Eichi Kato, also known as Shozan Kato, coming from a distinguished lineage of ceramic artists.
This Seto ware tea bowl is entirely hand-formed and embodies the aesthetics of wabi-sabi, with its intentionally irregular shape, softly distorted walls, and natural, unrefined foot (kodai).
The piece stands out for its complex multi-layered glaze, featuring:
flowing milky-white glaze running vertically across the surface
deep tones of black, brown, and smoky grey
striking metallic and iridescent effects inside the bowl, reminiscent of yohen / tenmoku-style firing
rich variations created through controlled, long firing processes
The interior is particularly captivating, with a shimmering, micro-crystalline surface that interacts beautifully with light—highly appreciated among collectors and tea practitioners.
The foot is left in raw light clay, showing clear traces of handwork, creating a strong contrast with the glossy and dynamic upper glaze.
A unique, one-of-a-kind artistic chawan. The tomobako is missing: the one in the pic is only for pictures purposes.
