- Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was an Austrian Symbolist painter and one of the leading figures of the Vienna Secession movement. He is best known for his highly decorative style, rich use of gold leaf, sensual female figures, and symbolic imagery. Klimt’s work bridges academic painting and modernism, combining Byzantine influences with Art Nouveau aesthetics.
His paintings rank among the most valuable in the world, regularly achieving tens of millions of euros at auction, with masterpieces such as Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I setting record prices. Demand for his work remains extremely strong in both museum and private collections.
“Water Serpents II” (1907) is a striking example of Klimt’s erotic symbolism. The composition depicts intertwined female nudes floating in a dreamlike aquatic environment, surrounded by ornamental patterns, vibrant colors, and gold accents. The work explores themes of sensuality, intimacy, and feminine power, expressed through fluid forms and lavish decorative surfaces. It stands as one of Klimt’s most provocative and celebrated compositions.
Gustav Klimt is one of the most influential artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and a central figure of the Vienna Secession. He stands alongside other major modern masters such as Egon Schiele, Koloman Moser, Alphonse Mucha or Ferdinand Hodler. Klimt’s highly distinctive style—characterized by ornamental richness, symbolic imagery, and the use of gold and decorative patterns—played a decisive role in the emergence of modern art in Central Europe and had a lasting influence on subsequent generations.
Klimt is regarded as an icon of early modern visual culture, comparable to other major cultural figures such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Andy Warhol, Banksy, orJeff Koons, both for his artistic legacy and for the enduring international demand and strong market valuation of his work.
