The Medusa was a French frigate that sank on 2nd July 1816 off the coast of present-day Mauritania, killing 160 people, including 147 abandoned on a makeshift raft. This shipwreck caused a resounding scandal in France early Restoration. It is illustrated by a famous painting by Theodore Géricault exhibited in 1819: “Le radeau de la Méduse”, which inspired by the artists in a nod to current events.
