Very rare Dunhill silver lighter, Cartier licensed, from 1935. With the following hallmarks:
- AD inside a diamond shape (Alfred Dunhill & Sons)
- A double head within an oval, used only in 1934 and 1935
With an amazing design. Quite heavy.
Made of solid silver, it shows some London marks and dates back to 1935.
The lid spring is still in working condition, and is provided with an ingenious flint mechanism. Like the Thorens lighter, Imperator or Kraemer, it is provided with a small spring bar to keep the flint on the wheel.
The lower screw works as the cap of a small compartment to store the spare flints.
On the bottom: DUNHILL (a stamp from London) - MADE IN ENGLAND - CARTIER Licence.
Inside: Pat. 405122 - no. 39 and 2 stamps from London.
This lighter is known as TALL BOY and was made famous by the paintings by Namiki Jampanese. Picasso engraved a drawing on one of these lighters and gave it to his lover (this specimen is currently display at a museum).
On the front, there are the marks by Dunhill of London and the date letter (= 1935).
In good condition considering its age, with many signs of wear but probably in working order. Untested and without flint. Please note: it need to be checked and revised before any use.
