The wonderful illustrations in this scarce edition of Jonathan Swift’s satirical fantasy, first published in 1726, are by the Golden Age artist Willy Pogany (1882-1955), a Hungarian-born contemporary of Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac and Kay Nielsen.
Pogany’s ‘Gulliver’ dates from his early days in America, following his move from England.

Note that this is the true first Pogany edition, published in America – not to be confused with the British edition, published two years later (with plain endpapers, plus a different binding).

Contents include:

Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World: Part I, A Voyage to Lilliput; Part II, A Voyage to Brobdingnag; Part III, A Voyage to Laputa; Part IV, A Voyage to the Houyhnhnms.

With publisher’s note by Richard Sympson, plus 13-page introduction by Padraic Colum.

Contents very clean overall. A few pale smudges/marks, two small stains, four short closed tears, one hinge stretched, pages 143-196 with bumping/creasing to upper corners, small corner crease to last plate, three tiny corner creases elsewhere, untrimmed edges with usual bumping and wear. Endpapers with usual age-toning; front free endpaper with child’s name in ink. Edges of page block with a little foxing. Binding somewhat loose, with slight lean. Boards and spine with discoloration and marks as shown, bumping and wear to extremities; one or two nicks to foot of spine.
