Anthropomorphic Okuyi Mask
Punu culture, southern Gabon.
Second half of the 20th century.
Wood and pigments.
Height: 34 cm; Width: 17 cm.
(Wood eroded on the reverse)

It presents features of apparent tranquility. The oval face is pigmented with white - with the help of kaolin. The eyes are caused by thin incisions in half-moons, highlighted by eyebrows delimited by brown pigmentation, forming a stylised heart. The thin nose presents two nostrils, the ears in relief are carved in a C-form, diamond scarifications decorate the temples, the individualised lips are hemmed and pigmented with red.
The polylobed hairdo is incised with thin striations, referring to the braided hairdos of the Punu. On the lower part, at the chin, a demarcation of the wood presents a little collar. It enabled to tie fabric or plant fibres, used to hide the body of the wearer.

This type of mask is called Okuyi, it can also be found in the regions known as Mukuyi or Mukudji. It refers to ancestor figures.
