Large, illustrated folio edition of the famous legal work known as "Practica Aurea" or "Practica Papiensis" by the famous fourteenth-century scholar of notarial law from Pavia, Gio. Pietro de Ferrari. A work of absolute worship for notaries and prosecutors, hindered by the Church. This text is also appreciable for the particular judgments, not always lenient, on the citizens of Pavia, on the institutions and on the decay of the city's customs in the first half of the fifteenth century.
A large engraving depicting the Arbor Consanguinitatis.

Giampietro Ferraris, or Giovanni Pietro Ferrari, Latinized as Johannes Petrus de Ferrariis (Pavia, c. 1364 – c. 1421), was an Italian jurist of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.
He was born around 1364 in Pavia, the son of Agostino, who in turn was a jurist like the brother of the latter Avogario. He graduated in law before 1388. From 1391 he was, several times, prior of the College of Jurists of Pavia.
In 1400 he began to write the Practica, a collection of commented judicial formulas, to which he devoted over 15 years.

He made numerous trips to Rome, Genoa, Venice and Florence, to France and Germany, but was in particular in Milan and Lombardy, between Pavia and Monferrato. He was vicar general of the Marquis of Monferrato Teodoro II in 1413 and the following year in Pontestura.
His work Practica (also known as ‘Practica aurea’ or ‘Practica papiensis’) had a considerable diffusion, especially beyond the Alps: apart from various manuscripts, it had 20 editions printed by the end of the fifteenth century (the first in Strasbourg in c. 1472).

Beautiful, coeval soft parchment binding, title handwritten on the spine. Title page with incorrect date: see typographic brand on the last page. Large and elaborate typographic brand engraved on the title page and repeated on the last page. A large engraving depicting the Arbor Consanguinitatis.
Pp. 33 cc. n. n., 1 c. b., 259 cc. numbered only on the front, 1 c. n. n.. An excellent copy with wide margins.
