An outstanding oval-shaped wall mirror with 2 side lights, decorated with dolphins. From a Roman villa (Italy).
Its beauty is enhanced by these dolphins which are identical to those of the Fontana del Tritone in Piazza Barberini in Rome. The fountain was designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini for Pope Urban VIII Barberini as part of the overall renovation work on the building that the pope had built in 1625, overlooking piazza Barberini.
In Greek sources, the Tritons are described as three-shaped beings, with a human head, greenish hair and eyes, large mouths with fangs, a scaly equine bodies ending in tails similar to those of dolphins.
