Balloon Dog is one of the most striking works in the famous Celebration series, inaugurated by Jeff Koons in the early 1990s. The artworks in this series evoke certain moments of the year (festivals and anniversaries), but also pay homage to the cycle of life. What else than a colourful balloon, which has been given the instantly recognizable shape of a dog, to suggest the joy of children feasts? In the eyes of the artist, this dog-shaped balloon ‘speaks of celebration, childhood, colour and simplicity. But it is also a Trojan horse. It is a Trojan horse for the whole body of works’.
Balloon Dog has the depth of an archaic sculpture.
The original sculptures bearing this title are made of high precision stainless steel with mirror polish, with a transparent blue, magenta, orange, red or yellow varnish finish. Despite its three meters high and its weight of one metric ton, no detail was left behind in the rendering of the shape of Balloon Dog. The artist's rigorous requirement, one of the most fascinating aspects of Koons' art, can be found in the porcelain version of Balloon Dog (Magenta), which simulates stainless steel with the mirror polished of monumental sculpture.
