Joseph Beuys was born in Krefeld in 1921. After serving in the First World War, he graduated in 1951 as a master student under Ewald Mataré at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where he held a professorship from 1961 until his dismissal in 1972. In his engagement with humanism, social philosophy and the anthroposophical teachings of Rudolf Steiner, Joseph Beuys developed his "expanded concept of art" and the concept of "social sculpture". His very extensive oeuvre is characterised by a subjective iconography, a mythical-magical connotation in the use of non-art materials such as fat and felt, and a multi-layered symbolism. He is considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. He died in Düsseldorf in 1986.
