From the first edition in the 2nd edition of 1801, 11 copper engravings from the insect section are offered. All of these are original coloured and printed on strong paper and with rich colours.
All copper engravings are untrimmed and in excellent condition for their age.
Among the plates is also the rare sheet on the structure of a butterfly wing.
The splendid colours that shine on the wings of the colourful butterflies, which look like coloured dust that can easily be wiped off with the fingers, are all little 'feathers' of different shapes, which sit with their short keels in the skin of the wing, and lie on top of each other like roof tiles.
The work was published over a long period from 1790 and comprises a total of 12 plate volumes with 1185 copper plates.
Friederich Bertuch 1747-1822 was one of the most important contemporary publishers. The plates were produced by Ludwig Ebner, C. Ermer, Theodor Götz, Ludwig Hess, Conrad Horney, J.B. Hoessel, C. and G. Starcke. and other Weimar artists under the direction of Melchior Kraus and Johann Heinrich Lips (Nissen p. 77).
