Seductive copy in very good condition of this new luxury edition, printed on glossy paper (called porcelain) illustrated by Julien Le Blant (1851-1936) painter specializing in the evocation of the Napoleonic epic:
18 large illustrations reproduced in colour and 68 illustrations
in the text.
Book published after the manuscript of the most curious testimony that
was left on Napoleon’s campaigns. The original is from 1888.
Volume bound in a gorgeous publisher’s binding of tan half lambskin with corners, spine adorned with a label and tooling in gold and blind-stamped, the boards are blue percaline, the front cover is adorned with a very beautiful polychrome composition by Souze, title in a mosaic vignette, gilt topstain.
In 1883, a scholar, Lorédan Larchey, while revising the author’s style, would publish extensive excerpts
Aux vieux de la vieille under the title Les cahiers du capitaine Coignet. It was an immediate success.
These memoires were constantly reissued, but the first complete edition wasn’t
published until 1968 by Hachette by the academic Jean Mistler, who added a
long foreword. His memoirs provide a colourful testimony, that should sometimes be taken with a grain of salt,
on Napoleonic Wars, thus participating in the construction of the Napoleonic legend.
