Lezionario Farnese Facsimile Franco Cosimo Panini (Please note: this copy has no fastening).
This impressive liturgical book, known as “Lezionario Farnese”, made in Rome shortly after the middle of the 15th century for Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, is an ideal point of arrival for the art of miniature. An exceptional work, which stands out for its monumental size and extraordinary decorative richness.

The beautiful decoration:
With this codex the cardinal wanted to commission a sumptuous work, a true masterpiece that for centuries became one of the Missals in use in the Sistine Chapel during the solemn religious ceremonies officiated by the pontiffs and the princes of the Church. Its his splendid full-page illuminations, enclosed within dazzling golden frames populated with putti, masks and flowers, show the echoes of great Renaissance painting, especially Michelangelo and Raphael.
A famous illuminator:
With its prodigious decoration, the codex is one of the most excellent works of Giulio Clovio (14981578), the most famous Italian illuminator of the second half of the sixteenth century, remembered by GiorgioVasari, who calls him "little Michelangelo" in the second edition of his Vite. With the “Libro d'Ore Farnese”, the “Lezionario” is cited by the Florentine historiographer as the artist’s most important work, who, after moving to Italy from his native Croatia in 1516, gained great fame there with his illuminated codices.
The Neo-Gothic binding:
In the absence of the original binding, lost during the Napoleonic invasion, in 1809-1810 the codex was covered with a rare and precious red velvet cover of neo-Gothic style, the work of the London bookbinders Benjamin II and James Smith. Corners and clasps are gilded with pure gold, while on the front plate there is the polychrome porcelain coat of arms of the Towneley family, the last owner of the work.

The work is accompanied by a commentary by Jonathan J. Alexander, with contributions from Jonathan J. Alexander, Nicholas Barker, Elena Calvillo and Clive Wainwright.
