For over 40 years, Unesco (Organisation of United Nations for Education, Science and Culture) has kept a list of sites designated as "World Heritage" sites. Since 2007, la Monnaie de Paris honours different monuments classed on this list with a series of collector coins. Starting in 2019, the coins returned to having a global theme.
In 2021, for the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the disappearance of the Portugese explorer and navigator Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521), la Monnaie de Paris is paying tribute to one of the first explorers to have succeeded in circling the globe.
One the face of the coin is an engraved portrait of the Portugese navigator and explorer, Ferdinand Magellan.
The Victoria navigating the seas is shown on the coin. It's the first ship to have circumnavigated the globe on its expedition to find the Molluca Islands. It's alluded to by the world map in the background that also shows the route taken by Magellan and his team. The parallels and meridians are also shown.
The '500 years' recalls the date of his death.
The face value is engraved on the bottom centre of the coin.
The reverse of the coin shows the Convent of Christ in the town of Tomar in Portugal. More specifically it shows the window of the central nave decorated with many Manueline motifs, most notably the 'ropes' that call to mind those used on the boats during the Age of Discovery.
Le Millésime 2021 as well as the signature of Joaquin Jimenez are on the bottom of the reverse.
The inscription RF is at the top right.
