Fleurs Animées by Grandville, complete with the 52 (29 +23) gorgeous plates painted in watercolour at the time including the two frontispieces engraved on wood and also enhanced with watercolour. In addition, the illustrations include two black and white plates
in volume II and many figures in the text in black and white.

Copy is fresh internally, clean plates, some foxing mainly on the pages of text and the tissues.
Famous 19th century book. One of the masterpieces by Grandville: “amazing botanic and anthropomorphic magic,
vision of “another world” dreamlike and
lush slipping sometimes into the icy depths of the nightmare.” Grandville died a mad man,
in the Vanves asylum in 1847. The Surrealists hailed him as one of their

New edition with very carefully retouched plates on the engraving and coloring by Louis Joseph Édouard Maubert, painter of natural history attached to the Jardin des Plantes. [2 volumes]
Paris: Garnier, 1867, large octavo (17.5 x 27 cm) 339 + 324 pages, collated and complete with the 52/52 plates (29 +23) enhanced in colour, including 2 frontispieces + 2 illus. in black and white in volume II.
Period glazed tawny half calfskin bindings, spine with raised bands adorned with two labels in red leather and gilded tooling.
The bindings are strurdy, the leather is rubbed and faded, damage to the headcap of volume 1 with a glued tear, the first joint has an approx. 10 cm split, nothing that negatively affects the solidity of the volume. Misaligned signatures. The marbled paper of the endpapers is cracked at the hinges. Interior in good condition; clean plates, some foxing mainly on the pages of text and the tissues.
Wet “LPM” stamp repeated on several sheets including the plates (see photos).
