Jacques de Strada and Jean de Tournes: Epitome du Thresor des Antiquitez. Lyon, 2 December 1553. Hundreds of ancient coins and portraits of emperors.

This is the first french edition. All engravings are made under the supervision of Bernard Salomon (le petit Bernard), a famous Renaissance artist with a contract with the publisher Jean de Tournes. Together, they composed several masterpieces in Lyon. Henry II, July 11, 1553, grants Strada as an author and Guerin as a bookseller a privilege of 12 years for this book in French, Latin, Italian and Spanish.

Very good condition with fine illustrations, a genuine antique book 468 years old. The book is an amazing collection of superbly designed ancient coins and medals (487), and describes the life of the Roman Emperors (Julius Caesar, Constantine the Great, Caesar Augustus, Cleopatra, Diocletian, Charlemagne and Merovingian Kingdom - Carolingian Empire), and kings up to about the year 1000.

The engraving work, of great finesse, shows great detail in portraits and excellent contrast and sharpness. Text in French & Latin. Index of emperors by alphabetical order.

Author: Jacques de Strada real name Jacopo Strada (1507–1588) was an Italian polymath courtier, painter, architect, goldsmith, inventor of machines, numismatist, linguist, collector, and merchant of works of art. His portrait by Titian has kept his image familiar. From 1552 to 1555 he sojourned in Lyon and travelled to Rome in the service of Pope Paul III, and after his death his successor Marcellus II, upon whose sudden death he returned north.

Printer: Jean de Tournes (1504–1564) was a French printer, book publisher and bookseller, and the founder of a long-lasting family printing business. He was the imprimeur du Roi, printer to the French king. He was apprenticed in the printing workshop of Gaspard and Melchior Trechsel, and then worked for about ten years as a compositor in the workshops of Sébastien Gryphe. Until 1547 he employed the engraver Georges Riverdy for illustrated works; after that date he used the noted engraver Bernard Salomon.

Illustrator: Bernard Salomon (1506–1561) was a French painter, draftsman and engraver. He was commissioned to provide decorations for Ippolito II d'Este in 1540, Henry II of France in 1548, and Jacques Dalbon, Seigneur de Saint Andre in 1550. He worked closely with the printer Jean de Tournes to design, engrave, and illustrate many types of books such as emblem books, documentaries and scientific works, and literary works, including the Bible and Ovid's Metamorphoses. He is sometimes referred to as "'Petit", alluding to the intricate detail Salomon works into his designs at small scale.
