The operation behind the creation of the Medici Collection pieces was not the simplest. Sands, clays and kaolin had to be selected from the same locations where the ancient Court craftsmen used to obtain their supplies. It was also necessary to replicate the period typical decorations, faithfully following the 16th-century processing and firing times. The Mancioli Medicea Collection was created in1980, on the occasion of the Medici Family 4th centenary. The first object released in 3000 numbered copies was the so-called ‘Fiasca da pellegrino’ (Pilgrim flask). All the collection pieces are absolutely identical to the originals, and their value can only increase over time. The Collezione Medicea is a prestigious initiative, aiming at recovering the outstanding artistic and cultural heritage of the Medicean porcelains, handed down to us over the centuries, in approximately 50 original pieces, preserved in the most important museums worldwide

The Medici Porcelains story began in the Renaissance. In order to research their origins, we need to step 400 years back. At that time, Francesco I de’ Medici, grand duke of Florence, decided to do some research to find the ‘method for making porcelain as the Asians do’. Nobody had succeeded in that endeavour until then. At this point, history is not of much help. After long and dangerous investigations, the secret was unveiled, thanks to the help of Buontalenti, a gifted miniaturist, architect and sculptor. In 1575, some talented craftsmen started the production of tender porcelain works at the Court workshops. It seems like, thanks to a brilliant intuition, they took from the Eastern tradition only the sufficient notions to lay the foundations of a new European style. As Vasari maintained, those were ‘artefacts of great technical perfection and highest artistic level’. For unknown reasons, the production was discontinued after a few years. Also for this reason, the remaining pieces are so rare and precious. Each piece owns a kind of magic, which is only in part due to the mystery surrounding its origins; the painted decoration shows, in fact, an amazingly masterful and sensitive touch.
