Monumental historical work illustrated by large plates folded several times, the most important one by Fumagalli. Alessandro Manzoni studied this work to write “Adelchi”.

It consists of 40 extensive dissertations, conducted on documents of the time, concerning the laws, customs and habits of the Lombards, ancient buildings, the state of trade and agriculture at the time, etc.

A magnificent copy printed on thick paper, very crisp. Predari 148. Cat. Hoepli 693. Cat. Meneghina 1015.
Cicognara: «Opera piena di erudizione e di dottrina». Lozzi 2633

Alessandro Manzoni studied these chronicles to write “Adelchi”: he directly reports on it in the essay entitled - "DISCORSO SOPRA ALCUNI PUNTI DELLA STORIA LONGOBARDICA IN ITALIA".

There are forty dissertations about the middle centuries, written in order to clarify the facts dealt with through the codes of the Cistercian archives especially of Chiaravalle and S. Ambrogio. The topics are the most varied: from the topography and buildings of Milan (with illustrations and plans) to the cultivation of olive trees in Lombardy in the 4th and 10th centuries, from the social structure of the Lombards to the wars of Frederick I (with amendments to the treatise of 1778), from the events of the monastic orders in Milan to the Ambrosian rite , all interspersed with the transcription and illustration of important unpublished documents, of which the oldest is a "carta di mundio".

Angelo Fumagalli (Milan, 1728 – Milan, 1804) was one of the greatest historians and diplomats of the 18th century: he found resources in the rich archives of the Abbey of St. Ambrose in Milan, and on the sovereign rights of the fiefdom of Lombardy.
