Pierre Belon (1517-1564)
Paris, Carolum Stephanum, 1553, oblong octavo (11.1 x 17 cm), [xxxii (index)], 448 pp.; 187 woodcut illustrations. First edition of a very rare book by the French naturalist and explorer Pierre Belon (1517-1564). In his De Aquatilibus, Belon provided drawings of 110 species of fish, of which 22 were cartilaginous and 17 freshwater species; and he spoke of some twenty other species for which he provided no drawings. Almost all of the marine water fish are Mediterranean, but there are also some species from the fish market in Paris. [Cuvier (Pietsch), p. 42]. The woodcuts show fish as well as a turtle, a hippopotamus, crocodiles, whales, etc. This copy has been used extensively, see photos of the binding, but it is complete except for the title page which is missing. An inscription in fountain pen confirms that this is the original edition. Another rarity is that this copy is colourised. Thus, old but sound speckled calfskin binding in poor condition, the edges of the pages are red but worn on the corners and the title page is missing. Otherwise complete. Some foxing, clear water stains and a small lack on the bottom of page 43. Very desirable despite the imperfections, the reserve price is well below the value. Very securely packed and insured registered Colissimo shipment.
