Its author, the French Hebrewist, Antoine-Rodolphe Chevallier (1523-1572) was a Protestant scholar, disciple of François Vatable in the sacred language. In 1559, called to the University of Strasbourg, to teach Hebrew, he only stayed in this city for a short time then left to fill the same chair at the University of Geneva, where he, and his eldest son, obtained free of charge, the right of bourgeoisie on 25 December 1559. A close friend of the reformer, John Calvin, whom he met before 1554, he was his interpreter for the Hebrew books that he needed.
