One of the bibliographic jewels that are exhibited in the Royal Library of El Escorial is this beautiful Greek codex, illuminated in Constantinople. It contains a collection of hymns, standing out among them the Akathistos, ‘Canticle of Victory’, the most famous hymn of the Greek liturgy in honour of Mary. In this codex, it has a splendid gold ornamentation that enriches in a special way its inspired miniatures. It is kept in the Library of El Escorial (Madrid) under the symbol R.I.19. Originally written in the sixth century in Byzantium and copied for Philip II (around 1550) on the occasion of his coronation.
