OTTHEINRICH – BIBEL.
The Ottheinrich Bible is one of the most precious illuminated manuscripts in the world. This manuscript, probably written around 1425 and probably partially illuminated in Regensburg, contains an early German translation of the New Testament. Its text is based on the Augsburg Bible manuscript, which is about 80 years older. From 1530 to 1532, Ottheinrich had Matthias Gerung complete the planned pictorial decoration in the Renaissance style. The Bible owes its name to the Count Palatine. After several changes of ownership, including being carried off as war booty, the Bavarian State Library acquired the manuscript and thus reunited the codex, which had been divided up in the 19th century.
Richly embossed with gold, magnificent original leather binding with 8 ornamental fittings and 4 brass book clasps. One of the 4 clasps has come off, but is in the box and would need to be reattached. On 4 sheets there were adhesions with the facing side. This has to remain from the production of the splendour ribbon. These adhesions have created small damages on the edges of these sheets. However, all outside the text and image area. Truly magnificent miniatures with exploding colours and abundant gold backing. First Bible in the German language - and about 100 years before Luther!
