Of very lovely provenance: from the library of the Chateau de Barante, with engraved bookplate. The chateau de Barante was built in the 17th century on land acquired in 1627 by the Brugière de Barante family. It was rebuilt in 1843 after a fire. Its enormous library of 60,000 volumes was one of the most extensive in France. Many celebrities, such as Chateaubriand, but also Lamartine, Juliette Récamier, Thiers, Guizot, Victor Cousin and above all Madame de Staël, Necker's daughter and a close friend of Prosper (and above all of his son, who was madly in love with her), stayed at the chateau.
Contents: Kingdoms of Congo, Angola, Juida, Gold Coast, Benin, Loango, Cape of Good Hope.
