Omschrijving
Voodoo-fetisj - Hout - Personnage zoomorphe - Benin
Begin 20e eeuw - Goed

Fetish monkey, Fon culture, Benin Height: 41 cm

Intriguing and powerful character mixing human and ape-like characteristics. It is an object of voodoo worship of the Fon peoples of Benin. The carving is powerful, strong and mastered. The figure seems anchored to the ground, drawing primal force from it. His position and attitude gives him a dominant air. The sculptor was able to breathe life into this work and give it a rather rare evocative power. The wood is ancient. Crusted patina on the front of the object, the back did not undergo the same offerings. The face is captivating, it is asymmetrical but realistic and balanced. A necklace decorates the neck. The hands are beautiful, in a waiting position. The whole piece invites the viewer to look, to imagine and to feel. A beautiful, rare and important collector's item. circa 1930
