The Madagascar expedition was a military intervention that led to the colonization of Madagascar by France. There were in fact two expeditions, the first in 1881-1882 which led to the signing of a protectorate little applied and the second in 1894-1895 which ultimately led to the annexation of Madagascar in 1896. In 1897 General Gallieni deposed the Malagasy queen Ranavalona III and abolished royalty. Gallieni's French action, under the name of "Pacification of Madagascar", continued to suppress revolts and insurrection.
