A sought-after edition of Erasmus' L’Éloge de la Folie for Eisen's famous compositions. The 13 figures and the frontispiece after Eisen, engraved by N. Le Mire, S. J. Pasquier, D. Lafosse, Beauvais, P. F. Tardieu, L. Le Grand et R. Lemire are beautifully printed. Verified and complete.
Translation by Gueudeville, revised by Meusnier de Querlon, author of the notes.
"This translation by Nicolas Gueudeville, revised and annotated by Meunier de Querlon, is based on the well-known Basel copy containing original drawings by Holbein. This lovely work is illustrated with a vignette on the title page, a headband, a cul-de-lampe and fourteen plates, including the frontispiece, all engraved in intaglio after Charles Eisen by Aliamet, La Fosse, Flipart, Legrand, etc.
A European bestseller from the moment it was published, l'Eloge de la folie (1511) features the goddess Folly facetiously addressing men to show them that she rules the world. A "true dispenser of joy", daughter of Inebriation and Ignorance, Folly presides over all the circumstances of human existence: she makes marriage and motherhood possible, governs every mistrust, and subjects kings and prelates to her empire. In this short parodic declamation, a paragon of the paradoxical praise and serious play favoured by the humanists, Erasmus likes to praise "Folly in a way that is not quite insane".
Provenance: Bookplate of Noël Pinelli (1881-1970), a French politician, barrister at the bar of Ajaccio in 1900. Commissioner of the Navy from 1901 to 1918, teacher on the "Duguay-Trouin" school ship.
Period marbled full sheepskin binding, ribbed spine adorned with a morocco label with gilded title and lavishly embellished compartments, speckled red edges.
A lovely copy, decorative, restorations on the caps and corners. Inside in fairly fresh condition despite some fine spots foxing. It should be noted that the last printed leaf of pages 221-222 is missing but it has been rewritten by hand and inserted into the work (see photos), thus making it complete.
