A lovely single book; A famous work by the French writer, historian and philosopher Voltaire, dealing with the history of Europe before Charlemagne until the dawn of the age of Louis XIV, also addressing the colonies and the Orient. The work of 174 chapters is the result of fifteen years of research by Voltaire, who revised the text until his death in 1778.
L’Essai is a work of philosophy of the Enlightenment as well as of history. Voltaire was reacting against Bossuet's Discours d'histoire universelle, which had presented the Judeo-Christian nations as being the most advanced. In contrast, l’Essai praised ancient China and India. Voltaire also tried to refute the prejudices about the Muslim world, according to which the Ottoman Empire and all other Muslim states were despotisms in which individuals had no rights and no personal property.
