Sixth edition, in part original, of La Bruyere's Les caractères, published 3 years after the first edition of 1688 at the same address by Etienne Michallet. The first in which La Bruyère explicitly signs his work (page 518) and in which he gives a privileged place to the Characters for the first time, by having his translation of Theophrastus printed in smaller type. It contains 54 new remarks compared to the previous editions.

A lovely copy in period full calfskin binding, ribbed spine, significant restorations on the joints and corners, the spine is a bit cracked but nonetheless decorative. Inside in very good overall condition, virtually free of foxing. Water stains on the endpapers in the front and back but not spreading onto the rest. The title page, with two struck out bookplates, is aged. Some signs of handling. A handwritten bookplate on the endpaper in the front (see photo).

The writing of Les Caractères began as early as 1670, but it was only after 17 years of work that La Bruyère decided to publish Les Caractères, without signing it with his name.

"Les Caractères by La Bruyère was a dynamic work, constantly in motion. While the first edition focuses more on the translation of Caractères de Théophraste, the editions from the fourth of 1689 onwards will include a great number of additions, so that the fourth edition (the first to be completed) has 764 remarks compared to 420 in the first, and the sixth edition, which we are offering has 997 compared to the original 420. The sixth edition (1691) gives a privileged place to Les Caractères for the first time, by printing his translation of Theophrastus in smaller type and by explicitly signing his work: in remark 14 of the chapter De quelques usages, he replaced "'Geoffroy D***' with 'Geoffroy de la Bruyère', the author's alleged highborn ancestor (p. 518)."
