A translation of ’De Americaanse zeerovers’, first published in 1678.


This volume bound without an engraved portrait frontispiece, called for by Sabin 23486, with a separately dated divisional titlepage at pp121 'A Journal of a Voyage made into the South-Sea, by the Bucaniers or Freebootees of America.

From the Year 1684, to 1689. Written by the Sieur Ravenau de Lussan. To which is added, The voyage of the Sieur De Montauban, Captain of the Freebooters on the Coast of Guinea, in the year 1699. Printed in London, 1741.


12mo, bound in period blindruled calf, spine with five gilt ruled raised bands, gilt numbered, all page edges speckled red. Period plain endpapers.

The book measures 10.5cm by 17cm.

The contents of the volume present are textually complete (bound without an engraved portrait frontispiece, called for by Sabin 23486).

Meeting collation: [2], 406, [24]pp, with three final pages of advertisements and a separately dated title page.

Alexandre Olivier Exquemelin (*about 1645 in Honfleur; † about 1707) was the author of "De Americaensche Zee-Rovers". One of the most important sources on piracy in the 17th century, it quickly became a bestseller after its first publication and has appeared in numerous editions in all European languages to date.
