PINK FLOYD OFF THE WALL – SPECIAL RADIO CONSTRUCTION

Pink Floyd – Off The Wall: Special Radio Reconstruction is a rare 1979 American eight track, radio-friendly white-label promo sampler LP for The Wall album that was primarily distributed to radio stations in 1979 and the early 1980s. The album featured extended versions of several songs, along with clean intros and outros. Instead of mixing track-to-track, the album was banded with gaps between tracks for precise directions and easier programming. A shorter overall run time allowed mastering the vinyl with deeper cut grooves for better sound quality.
Among the cool things in this sampler's eight tracks were a longer version of "Run Like Hell" with a clean opening and cold fade with no crowd noises, a version of "Young Lust" with a clean outro that lacks the phone call dialogue on top, and a version of "Goodbye Blue Sky" with a clean intro with no sound effects.
One of the FM stations I worked at in Los Angeles at the time had a copy of this beauty. Currently it is one of the better Pink Floyd vinyl rarities out there. It has always been extremely rare. Expect to spend at least $1200 USD (usually much more) when you find one.
What was different about this disc from all the others? Here is the track-by-track overview:

Another Brick In The Wall Part 2 - The 'hit'. Nothing special here. This version lacks the 9 second extended instrumental intro of the single version. It has the same ending as the single version - a fade out towards the end of David Gilmour's guitar solo.
Goodbye Blue Sky - The acoustic guitar intro is clean for about the first 9 seconds and lacks the bird tweeting and other pastoral sound effects at the beginning of the track. The album/CD version featured sound effects of birds and bomber fleets until the synths kicked in. The outro here is a wash. On this LP, the song completely fades into the same spot in the music where we would have heard the opening notes of "Empty Spaces" on the CD.
Young Lust - The song starts with the same pickup beat and goes right into the vocals as the album/CD release. It clocks in at 3m 25s on this release. Basically, it has the same running time as the original LP version, but the pickup note at the beginning lacks the little bit of crossover sound of "Empty Spaces". The outro is clean and lacks dialogue from the phone call back home on top of the music. It also lacks the Roger Waters scream during the guitar solo which is only found in the rare 7" single version.
One Of My Turns - A clean version of the song without obscuring the beginning or the end. The opening synth went unnoticed and had a faster attack that invaded faster. The first 6 seconds of the song were clean and lacked the dial tone sound effects of the album version. At the end of the song, the echo and reverberation of Roger Waters' vocal "Why are you running away...?" about 3 seconds longer than the album version.
Hey You - Not unlike the album version. Roger Waters' echoing chant of "...we fall, we fall, we fall...". fades just before the opening sound effects would have kicked in on the album version of "Nobody Home".
Nobody Home - Essentially the album version with a clean outro. The last note lasts for about 8 seconds as on the album, but lacks the sound effects from the beginning of "Vera".

Comfortably Numb -- Not unlike the album version, but the grooves were cut a little deeper, giving the track a better sound here.
Run Like Hell -- This extended studio version of "Run Like Hell" has a clean opening and cold fade with no crowd noises. This version has a longer intro, restoring an extra 4-bar that completed the full 8-bar intro. It also has a longer outro with the full guitar chorus repeated twice (instead of once) for the full 16 bars. All in all, this version recovered about 19 seconds that had been cut from the track. This song is one of the gems on this EP. For more information on what was cut from the album version, click here.
