Sand Dunes, Seasons of the Children is a collection of photographs by Shoji Ueda, one of Japan's leading post-war photographers.Born in Sakaiminato, Tottori Prefecture in 1913, Ueda began taking photographs at the age of 17 and continued for almost 70 years until his death in 2000. In 1913, Ueda was born in Sakaiminato, Tottori Prefecture, Japan. He lost his pre-war negatives in the chaos of the evacuation of Japan, and although his work was published in camera magazines and solo exhibitions after the war and was highly acclaimed, he remained a man of few people in the know. Ueda's rise to national and international prominence was triggered in the 1970s with the publication of Children the Year Around (1971), edited by Shoji Yamagishi of Camera Mainichi, and this book, the 11th in a series of photo books published by Asahi Sonorama Sensho, which had a sufficient impact to make his name well-known. The book was also influential enough to make its name known to the world. The first half is an avant-garde production set in the ‘dunes’ synonymous with Ueda, while the second half depicts the four seasons and climate of the San-in region with children as the motif.
