Ancient Pair of Large Fibulae in chiselled and enamelled silver, late 19th century - Tizerzai - South Morocco, Tiznit
These fibulae consist in triangular brooches in chiselled silver, decorated with enamels and small corals. They were worn by pair by Berber women, on each shoulder, and served to retain the rectangular piece of fabric, worn on other clothes.
Dimensions of each fibula:
Width: 12.5 cm.
Height: 21 cm.
Origin: Tiznit - South Moroccan (Berber Jews), very likely from the late 19th century.
These are authentic pieces of collection, in quite good original condition.
They are apparently in silver of minimum 800° content (like for all the similar pieces that were tested), but the hallmark is invisible, meaning that the fibulae might be anterior to the late 19th century.
A pair of identical fibulae is reproduced on page 45 in The Splendor of Ethnic Jewelry by France Borel (T&H editor) (Colette and Jean-Pierre Ghysels Collection) and page 26 in Bijoux du Maroc (Du Haut Atlas à la vallée du Draa) by Marie-Rose Rabaté (ACR Edition)
